IN THE EYES OF: MARIA VARELA - EP.4

Tangier

Discover the artist Maria Varela in this 4th episode of our ‘In The Eyes Of’ series, and immerse yourself in her experience of a residency in Tangier, Morocco.

Originally from Athens, interdisciplinary artist and teacher of applied arts at the University of Northern Macedonia, Maria Varela explores the links between technology, handicraft and collective memory.

During her residency in Tangiers, she took an interest in local textile know-how and its ability to transmit narratives. Her work questions handicraft and its role as a medium of emancipation, interrogating the relationship between female creators, traditions and the traces left in time. Her apprenticeship in local weaving with Moroccan designers has given her an insight into the notions of memory, the instrumentalisation of know-how and overproduction.

This research invites us to rethink the interaction between crafts and new forms of artistic expression.

IN THE EYES OF: BACHIR TAYACHI - EP.3

Art Explora
Marseille

Dive into the unique perspective of Tunisian artist Bachir Tayachi in this third episode of “In the Eyes Of,” where we follow his journey during an artist residency in Marseille.

Born in 1995, Bachir Tayachi lives and works in Tunis. Through his preferred mediums of photography, video, and drawing, he develops an artistic practice rooted in capturing raw emotions, while questioning the complexity of identity.

As part of the Art Explora festival’s crossed residencies programme, Bachir Tayachi spent a month in Marseille, where the culture, the Mediterranean sea, and the diversity of stories shaped his project.

In Marseille, his project explores identity and the relationship with the body, through multiple and contrasting experiences. Here, he has been working on his first soloshow, In My Room, which runs from October 12 to November 5 at JAOU, Biennale de Tunis.

IN THE EYES OF: RENATA POLJAK - EP. 2

Art Explora
Venice
Discover the second episode of "Through the Eyes Of", featuring Croatian artist Renata Poljak. Known for her use of diverse media such as photography, installation, film and video, Poljak creates works rich in metaphor, exploring contemporary political, economic and social issues. His videos and installations fuse documentary techniques with fictional narrative to address migration, both historical and current. As part of the programme residency program at the Art Explora festival, Renata Poljak developed Songs for the Sea, a project that explores the interplay between philosophy, science, utopia and mythology linked to the sea. The work also addresses ecological challenges through video installation and performance, highlighting the role of song in Mediterranean myths. By examining marine life, such as plankton, her work poetically navigates from the microscopic to the vast. Artist: Renata Poljak Produced by: Art Explora Location: Zagreb
