Renata Poljak

Biography

Renata Poljak is a Croatian artist born in 1974. Living and working in Zaghreb with a variety of media including photography, installation, film and video, Renata Poljak uses images with strong metaphorical potential that refer to political, economic and social phenomena from the early 1990s to the present day. Her videos and installations often combine a documentary approach with fictional stagings to address the issues and representations of historical
and contemporary migratory processes.

Through a variety of media (film, video, collage, neon, installation and drawing), Renata Poljak's work combines autobiographical, documentary and staged sequences to explore the social consequences of the Balkan conflicts of the 1990s. During her residency, Renata Poljak developed her Songs for the Sea project, which explores different fields of research, from philosophy to science, from utopia and mythology to music and its role in the past and contemporary history. The project revolves around ecological thinking, moving away from activism and approaching the subject from a poetic and utopian angle. It takes the form of a video installation and a performance that address these issues, on the scale of plankton and underwater micro-creatures, while exploring Mediterranean myths and stories through song.
