Zeineb Henchiri - Echo Chamber

Performance

Especially for the Art Explora Festival artist Zaineb Henchiri creates a performance that incorporates her recent research with existing performative elements in her practice. In her performances Henchiri creates different personas that function as alter egos of the artists as well characters she has encountered online and in her daily life. Echo Chamber is a performative reading accompanied by visual projections. The performance questions the ability to have a distinct voice within the contemporary realm of technological and political changes. Shadows Durres works as a repository of a patchwork of phrases left on the internet, messages shared with the artists, and available tutorials.

Especially for the Art Explora festival, artist Zaineb Henchiri creates a performance that incorporates her recent research with existing performative elements in her practice. In her performances, Henchiri creates different characters that function as alter egos of the artists as well as characters she has met online and in her daily life. Echo Chamber is a performative reading accompanied by visual projections. The performance questions the ability to have a distinct voice in the contemporary realm of technological and political change. Echo Chamber functions as a repository for a patchwork of phrases left on the Internet, messages shared with artists and available tutorials.

These traces have an epistolary tone and yet resemble the hectic atmosphere of online engagement such as the chaotic scrolling on screens, where one jumps from one video or content to the other without order. This disjointed flow echoes and directly references the mythological figure of Echo, who as a divine punishment loses the ability to speak for herself and can only repeat other phrases.

Zeineb Henchiri

Zeineb Henchiri, born in 1992 in Tunis, lives and works in Paris. A visual artist, performer, and neuropsychologist, her work explores the interstitial spaces of contemporary existence, where reality blurs with fiction, presence with absence. Through the creation of hybrid female figures, Zeineb interrogates forms of confinement—both imposed and self-created—using the body, memory, and digital artifacts as materials.

Her artistic journey began with a fascination for human nature, particularly the experiences of individuals living with schizophrenia and the way they describe their hallucinations. Over time, this interest evolved into the creation of fictional identities, exploring themes of isolation, transformation, and the fragile boundary between reality and fiction. Her trilogy of projects, Persona, Shadow, and Echo, delves into the complexities of identity, memory, and the digital world. These works highlight the tension between personal and collective narratives, and the way digital voices and fragmented histories shape our sense of self in today’s hyperconnected, yet profoundly isolated, society.

Zeineb Henchiri is part of the 2025 Art Explora Mediterranean Residency Programme.
