IN THE EYES OF: BEA BONAFINI - EP.1

Art Explora
Valletta

Discover the first episode of "In the Eyes Of", our series that takes you on a journey of discovery of the Mediterranean through the eyes of the artists who inhabit it.

Italian artist Bea Bonafini, based between London and Barcelona, took part in the programme cross-residency program developed as part of the Art Explora festival. During her residency in Malta, she explored the blending of identities and myths resulting from trans-Mediterranean migration and trade. Bea Bonafini explored Neolithic archaeological sites and the way ceramics preserve and transmit myths about mother goddesses and female deities.

Under The Azure exhibition booklet

Art Explora
Marseille
The exhibition Under the azure takes as its starting point a Hittite myth (the Hittites were a people of Asia Minor who lived in the 2nd millennium B.C.) according to which, every evening, the sun would fall into the sea at the moment of its setting. Under the azure brings together works by some twenty international artists, both historic and emerging, whose artistic practice has been nourished by a fascination for the Mediterranean Sea. The exhibition reflects the dreams and fears of the Mediterranean Sea, from the people who inhabit it to the dramas it witnesses.

Exhibition booklet UNDERTOW

Art Explora
Marseille
The title of the exhibition UNDERTOW / Undertow refers to the water current at the bottom, which moves in the opposite direction to the current observed at the surface. The exhibition thus explores the Mediterranean Sea, its surface currents and those of the depths: the stories that intertwine there, the human experiences that it binds and rests upon. For it is both a place of travel and exile, of hope and disillusionment, of life and death. The works presented - by artists from different regions of the Mediterranean basin - reflect a diversity of viewpoints that challenge the often well-established prejudices about the region's migratory phenomena. By giving them space, voice and form, the works reveal the power of the stories and their protagonists.
