programme artist residencies in the United States

Art Explora has contributed to the development of a programme residency program in the United States, due to open in autumn 2021, in association with Villa Albertine, a French cultural institution present in 10 cities in the United States.

Villa Albertine

Villa Albertine headquarters in New York

In November 2021, the Villa Albertine, 4th Villa de la France à l'étranger, opened in 10 cities in the United States and welcomed 80 residents for its inaugural season, until December 2022.

This institution renews the concept of residency with a contemporary vision that integrates the specificities of the country, beyond the model of a villa in a single city, and demonstrates the desire to create a new community at the service of the arts and ideas. The Villa Albertine aims to be an innovative project tailored to the needs of creators, through tailor-made exploratory residencies throughout the United States.

The Villa Albertine is supported by Art Explora Foundation.

Art Explora Foundation and the Villa Albertine share the ambition of renewing forms of artistic mobility and nurturing shared research into major social issues.

A visionary on the subjects of access and artistic innovation, the foundation supports the development of eight thematic residencies spread over four territories:

  • In Miami on the theme of environmental emergencies
  • In Los Angeles and New York on creative and digital industries
  • In Texas (Houston and Marfa) on space exploration

Co-programmed with Art Explora, 8 French artists, visual and transdisciplinary artists, astronomer and poet participated in Villa Albertine residencies.

Co-direction of the Ballet national de Marseille

In residence in New York and Los Angeles

This collective of three artists share the creation of choreographic pieces, performances and films for the Ballet national de Marseille, which they co-direct. Their challenge is to question the extraordinary richness with which bodies represent themselves today on social networks, in the public space and on stage, notably through films that decompartmentalize dance outside the stage. Los Angeles, a city where images are born and invented, and whose boundless energy reminds them a great deal of Marseille, will be an opportunity for them to meet new collaborators "with whom to dream and invent real stories for bodies", and to envisage a possible terrain for future creations.

In residence in Houston and Marfa

For several years now, Dove Allouche has been working on a body of work that often stems from his many collaborations with scientists. During his residency, he will focus on the first prebiotic molecules, of cosmic origin. They are one of the main hypotheses for explaining the appearance of life on our planet. What creative process enabled life to emerge from inert matter? And how, from this same matter, can we produce works that embody nothing other than their very appearance? In Marfa, an ideal location for celestial observation, Dove Allouche plans to initiate new astrobiological research to produce laboratory images directly from organic samples.

In residence in Miami

Installations by French-Moroccan artist Hicham Berrada subtly blend art and science, modifying the physical parameters of an environment (water pH, temperature, luminosity, air pressure) to create the conditions necessary for the emergence of the desired plastic result. In Miami, the artist will pursue his research into morphogenesis, defined as the study of the laws that determine forms in nature. Hicham Berrada will be observing corals, whose shapes blur the boundaries between animal, mineral and vegetable forms. He will take a closer look at a new pollution-resistant coral species, resulting from the hybridization of two endangered species, and meet the researchers who are trying to adapt corals to an environment that has been modified by human action.

In residence in Miami

Mimosa Echard is interested in creating hybrid ecosystems where the living and the non-living, the human and the non-human cohabit. Her works explore zones of contact and contamination between organic and consumer objects, elements that our cultural conventions may perceive as ambivalent, even contradictory. In Miami, a city that is frantically building on the water, Mimosa Echard aims to explore the cultural, social and political superimpositions that make up this contrasting urban space: protected and annihilated natural spaces, brand-new buildings and shopping malls, labyrinthine residential districts and ultra-secure deluxe villas.

Astronomer
In residence in Houston and Marfa, Texas

Fatoumata Kebe has a doctorate in astronomy from Sorbonne University. She specializes in the study of the space environment. Her research focuses on quantifying the impact of space activities on astronomical observations, and studying the pollution around the Earth caused by these same activities. Fatoumata Kebe is also leading an entrepreneurial project, "Connected Eco", focusing on water conservation in the agricultural sector. She also founded the Éphémérides association, which teaches and organizes astronomy and space-related activities. The aim of the residency will be to produce an audio series telling the story of the lunar rocks brought back by the Apollo space missions from 1969 to 1972. In total, this represents 380 kg of lunar rocks, some of which are still under NASA seal, to enable future generations of researchers to study them with more advanced technological tools.

Simone Lagrand, an artist from Martinique who defines herself as a poetess-pawolèz, began performing in Paris in the 2000s, notably on the slam scene. Initially finding in writing and orality a means of coming to terms with her childhood and family history, she began "a long exploration of the notion of pleasure and desire in a post-colonial and above all diglossic context", which led her, through Martinique Creole, French and sometimes English, to encounter the major themes of the contemporary world. Her "Tarot Littoral" project uses mangroves to explore the possibility of identifying ecological and cultural issues common to Florida and the insular Caribbean.

Artist and filmmaker
In residence in Miami

With her camera and sometimes other tools, Ariane Michel often gets close to beasts, plants or minerals to create works that shift our point of view. Like a shaman, she uses films, installations and performances to redraw the scenery in which our imaginations are woven. This approach invites us to reweave our imaginations and opens up new ways of being in the world around us. Her work has been seen in art centers, festivals and cinemas, but also in forests, subway corridors, store windows, places of worship and on shores (from FID Marseille to Art Basel, from Nuit Blanche in Paris to MoMA in New York). For her residency, ArianeMichel plans to capture imaginations of Miami from mangroves, marshes, the sky, near alligators, crabs and mosquitoes, to see our civilization as one among others.
