PROGRAMME

16:45 - Official speeches

17:30 - Concert by pianist Mourad Tsimpou

Location: Stage

Considered as a younger brother on the Marseilles scene, pianist Mourad Tsimpou has become increasingly assertive over the years. His second album takes a decidedly urban turn. He tells his story on piano and vocals: his childhood, his city, his origins, his illness and his passion for music. Mourad Tsimpou's music gives pride of place to the piano, but is punctuated by hip hop beats and electro echoes.

19:00 - Performance by Ballet Preljocaj

Location: Stage

"While we were working in the studio with the dancers on Gravity, I imagined a work session based on Stephen Hawking's theories on black holes, extremely powerful centers of gravity that capture everything that happens on the horizon of their axis. I focused on this "event horizon", the point at which we can no longer escape the black hole's pull. I imagined a circle, around a strong central point, and I wanted to play with this horizon, opening and closing it. I'd already written eight minutes of choreography, but I was still working on the metronome. One night in the studio, to stimulate the dancers, I played them Ravel's Bolero . It was incredible: a comet flew through the studio! The Bolero is a musical black hole, a constant repetition that sucks you in, a musical gravity from which you can't escape. I couldn't take it off! All I had to do was choreograph the rest.

With a career spanning more than 35 years and nearly 60 creations to his credit, Angelin Preljocaj is one of the best-known French choreographers in the world. Trained in New York with Merce Cunningham, then performing for Dominique Bagouet, he founded his own company in 1985, developing an angular, sensual style that is both fluid and architectural, resolutely contemporary. Some of his works have been included in the repertoires of major ensembles, from the New York City Ballet to the Paris Opera Ballet, and he orchestrates precious encounters between disciplines, calling on fashion designers for costumes and visual artists for sets... Today, with its 30 permanent dancers, Ballet Preljocaj gives an average of 120 performances a year, appearing on stages the world over.

- invited by Martha Kirszenbaum

Location: stage

Filles de Blédards is an artist collective based between Paris and Marseille that explores and offers spaces for reflection, exhibition, discussion and celebration around immigrant identities. Founded by Alexia Fiasco and Mariam Benbakkar in 2018, it is based between Paris and Marseille. Alexia Fiasco is a photographic artist and social worker. Mariam Benbakkar is also a photographer and does artistic research around Colonial History in Marseille. The collective was born out of the desire to generate other imaginary worlds by those involved. Filles de Blédards has programmed a series of DJ sets featuring female musicians and producers from Marseilles and around the world, who will be putting on an original performance to close the Festival's opening night.
