The film Foragers depicts the problems associated with the practice of gathering wild edible plants in Palestine/Israel with ironic humor and a meditative rhythm. Combining fiction, documentary and archival footage, it shows the impact of Israeli nature protection laws on these customs.

The restrictions prohibit the harvesting of artichoke akkoub and za'atar (thyme) and have led to fines and prosecutions against hundreds of people caught harvesting these indigenous plants. For Palestinians, these laws further isolate them from their land, while Israeli state representatives insist on their scientific knowledge and duty to protect. Foragers captures the love, joy and knowledge inherited from tradition, as well as their resistance to the prohibition law. By reframing the terms and limits of conservation, the film raises questions about the politics of extinction, i.e. who determines what disappears and what stays alive.

Followed by a conversation with the commissioners.

Jumana Manna

Jumana Manna is a visual artist and filmmaker. Her work explores how power is articulated, focusing on the body, land and materiality in relation to colonial legacies and histories of place. Through sculpture, film and sometimes writing, Manna addresses the paradoxes of curatorial practices, particularly in the fields of architecture, agriculture and law. Her practice considers the tension between modernist traditions of categorization and conservation and the indiscipline of ruin, life and its regeneration.
