SPARTENZA is the Sicilian word for departure, separation, estrangement. It's an open port, a shelter for all those men and women who have tried to leave and failed, those who have left and are thinking of returning, those who have let themselves be adopted by a distant port, weaving their own traditions and melodies with those of the other. This creation saw the light of day in 2018, at Marseille's Cité de la Musique.

Maura Guerrera (vocals, Sicilian tambourine) & Malik Ziad (mandola, guembri, vocals)

‍Accordingto Manu Théron, the great bearer of the Occitan tradition, who will also be joining this project: "For years now, Maura Guerrera has been exploring a unique, composite and singular musical territory, that of Sicily's vocal traditions. Attentive to academic research as well as to that of musicians, composers and performers of this treasure, she is also a joyful and committed activist, whether in the concerts she gives or in her teaching. She has invited musicians from all horizons to join her in her discoveries, and it's only natural that Malik Ziad, with whom she has developed an astute complicity, should accompany her on this project. The journey they are about to embark upon is, of course, the one they have made towards each other, listening to the buried beats and submerged waves that link, criss-cross and traverse their respective territories.
