Digging is a performative methodology conceived by artist Astrit Ismaili that aims to look into past events through the limitations of language and grammar. The artist tells stories within a framework where language often fails to capture how events unfolded. Digging is conceived as a transitional performance as it transfers the heritage of Entr’acte, or intermissions, intermezzos in the realm of temporality and language. Digging is both a metaphor and a practice that touches upon the elasticity of memory and time through spoken recollection. Seated among the audience, Ismaili begins with a simple statement about their day, from there, tracing the same moment back in time, recalling what they did exactly one year ago, then further back, unraveling layers of personal history and how they are related to broader socio - economic transformations. Blurring past and present, Ismaili challenges the ways we construct and reconstruct our narratives, turning memory into a dynamic, shared experience.

Astrit Ismaili

Astrit Ismaili (b. 1991, Pristina) is a performance artist whose work explores the body as a site of transformation, resilience, and futurity. Blending voice, movement, and costume, Ismaili creates performative personas that challenge gender norms, identity constructs, and the limits of physical expression. Their practice often incorporates sound, pop culture aesthetics, and speculative storytelling, imagining new ways of being and belonging. Ismaili has presented work at venues such as KW Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), and the Venice Biennale. They are also known for their ongoing research into the voice as an extension of the body, using it as both a personal and political tool. Based between Amsterdam and Pristina, Ismaili continues to shape performance as an expansive, fluid, and deeply embodied practice.
